On the 29th of August 2016, took place in Bamyan, the ceremony of inauguration of the Maidan Shar-Bamyan Road at the presence of H.E. the Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, the Minister of Public Works Mahmoud Baligh and the Italian Ambassador Roberto Cantone. The Italian Cooperation has provided this infrastructure with the support of 99.400.000,00 Euro grant, plus a separate grant of worth 2.000.000,00 Euro to UNOPS for technical assistance and monitoring.
The work covers a road segment of 136 km in mainly mountain area. This national road provides the first part of the East-West corridor (from Kabul to Herat). Prior to its implementation, the journey from Kabul to Bamiyan required at least 10 hours, now due to the new road it will be possible to do it in 2 and a half hours.
This infrastructure makes easier the connections between Kabul and Bamiyan, and will support the social and economic growth of the area, starting from the local commerce.
The Italian Development Cooperation has funded and is funding several infrastructure projects in Afghanistan and it will continue to do so in the coming years. Public infrastructure represents the key element for greater economic growth and the further developments in all the society sectors.
