Between July and October four training courses were taught in Herat for the prosecutors of the Elimination of Violence Against Women (EVAW) Unit of the Attorney General Office and for the staff of the Department of Justice (DoJ), all funded through the Italian project AID 7436 “Support to the Rehabilitation of the Afghan Judiciary and Penitentiary System” for a total amount of 62,000 Euros. The courses, attended by a total of sixty people, were provided in order to make gain an advanced knowledge both on the installation, operation and management of the main IT tools, as well as on a number of legal issues, such as historical development of the formal and informal justice systems, duties of the Department of Justice, civil law and family law, civil procedure code, judicial institutions, and international conventions to which Afghanistan is a party. On the final ceremony, which ended with the delivering of certificates of attendance to the participants, the local authorities–representatives of the Office of the Governor of Herat, of the Attorney General Office and of the Department of Justice – expressed sincere appreciation for the initiatives, praising the ongoing commitment of the Italian Cooperation in support of the justice sector in Herat province and wishing the continuation of this fruitful support from Italy.
