On 13 February 2017, the University of Florence inaugurated the first edition of the Master’s Programme on Urban Analysis and Management. The opening ceremony was attended by the University Chancellor Luigi Dei, the Vice-Chancellor for International Relations, Giorgia Giovannetti, the Delegate for Cooperation and Master’s Coordinator, Mirella Loda, and by H.E. Abdul Waheed Omer, Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in Italy.
During the ceremony, the University of Florence presented the work done so far in Afghanistan thanks to a fruitful collaboration between the University and the Afghan national institutions. Currently the University of Florence is providing technical support to the Ministry for Urban Development of Afghanistan in the framework of a new project that was funded in November 2016 by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation. This new initiative aims at improving territorial governance in the urban areas of Herat and Bamyan to contribute to the preservation of historical heritage in Bamyan and to promote local economic development of the city of Herat.
